A Flag Ceremony

The Boy Scout troop needed to help the boys pass off an outdoor flag ceremony. So I arranged it with Dr Bryner Principal at Matt’s school Hillfield to use their flagpole and Jake English to be our official scout flag person to teach us. Here are some pics from that day. Matt was again an honorary scout so that there were enough people holding this huge flag so that our leader Anna Stoddard did not have a coronary as it almost touched the ground .

Pinewood Derby!

The boys were both allowed to compete in the Pinewood Derby this year. Andrew was in it because he is in Boy Scouts (and he LOVEs it and is thriving- big surprise). Matt was able to compete with the Boys Scouts because the ward was invited to participate and when it came down to it, we needed more competitors on the scouts side, so he was an honorary scout for the day. First they had the weigh in and official registration to get their names on the board.

They had fun, Andrew was able to make it past the first tier, as was Matt.

Andrew won a second place ribbon, MAtt also would have, but since he is not really a scout, there were not ribbons for him- which did make him a bit saddened.

All in all, a fun evening.

Alone again

Well, Robert left yesterday for the last chapter of ‘away from home’ training. Another two+ stint. He will be in training and then at Keesler where we will all move to at the end of the boys’ school year. People always say that things break and happen when the husband leaves and our family is living proof of that. As soon as Robert walked into the airport, Matt was sick to his stomach and let me know he would be throwing up any minute, Andrew broke down because Dad left, Evelyn wasn’t sure why Dad did not walk in the door after she did and Rora could not go to sleep and fell out of her bed because she slept so badly. I stepped on a paperclip which Matt had so kindly opened and put in the hallway so that I got to get a tetanus booster this morning because it was inserted over an inch into the soft arch of my right foot! Yes! we are starting off this time very well.

Matt’s First Loose Tooth

Matt lost his first tooth about two weeks ago. He was so excited than when he had lost it in the morning, he had to take it to school with him. His teacher helped him make this such a special day/event for him, she gave him a neckalce tooth container in which to keep his tooth, and a certificate! Matt was beaming ear to ear about it all day! Here are a few of his cheesy smiles.

We went to Disney on Ice

So I left the boys with a friends and drove through the first snowstorm of the year to get to the Disney on ICE, Just me and the girls. I know Evelyn loved it, Rora lasted until the last 30 minutes or so before she got fidgety. Evelyn was thrilled to have gone, but she let me know that we saw all of the princesses EXCEPT not Pocahontas. It made quite an impression on her that everyone else was there but not Pocahontas. Funny little girl, what a thing to take away from the show. I enjoyed it thoroughly, teh ice skating was well done, and they did a fantastic job on each of the stories including enough without lasting too long, and fantastic costumes and props/sets. My only regret was that at half-time, my camera batteries died and my spares were dead as well, I guess rechargeables lose their charge when they get old….note to self, date all batteries and watch how they hold their charges. You will have to excuse poor Rora in her picture, the crowd was so overwhelming to her she was not happy about me putting her down to take her picture

Andrew’s First time Shooting

Since Andrew turned 8 he was able to go shooting. In our family this is the predetermined age where you get to first accompany Dad to go shooting. Andrew says that he had fun, though I am pretty sure the beebee guns were preferred over the real ones and Andrew liked the Handguns over the 10-22.OF course I think that has a lot to do with how heavy the 10-22 seemed to him and the size of it was awkward for him to hold correctly.

BEFORE they went out, Andrew learned about the sites on each gun, how to line it up correctly and about the rules of guns. Here they are as stated by Andrew.

1 A Gun is always loaded and because of that you should check it by checking the barrel.

2 Don’t aim at anything unless you intend to hurt or destroy it.

Andrew’s Baptism

So Andrew turned 8 in Sept and in UT that meant that the first Saturday of the month following your birthday that was not conference is you baptism date along with anyone else who falls into that same category. So here are a few pics from that day

A week

Well, it has been a long week here at the Mayo household. The kids of course needed to act up- I can handle that. I became sick as a dog with a sinus infection, no voice, a stiff neck (for lack of a better phrase, though the stiffness was from the bottom of my ribcage, across my whole back up to the base of my skull where it turned to migraine levels) and a cough that would not quit, all to be told by the doctor I am perfectly healthy and he will do nothing for me since I am doing anything that can be done- Yep I can handle that too. Matt started back at Hillfield (his school from last year) on Monday while Andrew continued on at Mountain View, both schools starting and getting out at the same times and ten minutes apart in opposite directions from each other- got that one covered too. Evelyn is now afraid of the dark so much that she sneaks into my bed in the middle of the night to sleep with me- sure I can share my bed too. Rora still can’t figure out the whole time change and since she has not slept past 5, maybe six on a good morning since Robert left, it has now become 4AM maybe 5 for our morning wakeup calls with a bedtime of anywhere from 10-12, this makes for a very cranky two year old (and mommy)- I guess I can handle this one too. Oh yeah and the construction to renovate houses here on base accidentally ran over the phone/internet lines leaving me stranded for four days- starting to become irritated, but still doable. OK so I can handle all of these things separately, but together…. who do you think I am, SUPERMOM? Well, at least I have something to aspire to:)

Well, so much for my goal of keeping up on the blog all year, but I am getting back into it, so here we are! This is what I got done this morning before the kids got off to school. Andrew had gotten glasses right after his birthday last month since he struggled on the ‘quick eye exam’ that they always do in the well checks. So I finally got around to getting his name and a Dragon as requested on the case to make it look cool. I used the cricut and the SCAL program for the dragon and Pooh Font for the name.

Andrew and Robert’s Space Shuttle

So it was a late afternoon one day and Andrew and said something about the space shuttle in his latest book and somehow Robert and he decided they wanted to make one! It took a couple of hours with letting glue dry and the various parts, but here are some pictures of the final results, complete with booster rockets, a grasping arm (if that is the right term) and a launch pad! Both are quite proud of the results.
